Our Story

Älvdalslax is a small-scale family business founded by Mats Hjort in 1982, focusing on salmonid fish farming. Nowadays Mats’ daughter Marit Beronius runs the company with her husband Anders and their three employees. Our mission is to cultivate Swedish rainbow trout in a sustainable way, where quality always exceeds quantity and we control the durability circle. From fry to fish, from fish to roe, from roe to fry.

Since the very beginning we also sell juvenile fish, roe and fry to other fish farmers in Sweden. We keep the farm in enclosures by the shore of the river Österdalälven, outside Gåsarv village in the region of Älvdalen. When you’re in the neighborhood, please drop by.

The River

Apart from the fact that our shore in the world is a beautiful place, it is also perfect for fish farming. In the river Österdalälven the water is flowing, streaming and rushing down from the highlands and mountains of the northern parts of the Dalarna region. The water is clear and oxygen rich, and maintains the same even, cold temperature throughout the year. The conditions keep the fish in constant motion, which result in a rare meat quality. Oðerwilldera, as we would put it.

The Future

Today you can find our roe and our quality fish in fine food stores and first-class restaurants. That is the result of many years of dedicated food craftsmanship and a well-managed aquaculture plant. When thinking ahead, we include all of Sweden’s aquaculture, not only our own fish farm. Our aim is to continue developing Swedish fish farming in a sustainable and circular way. Together, and in collaboration with government and research, we strive to make Sweden more self-sufficiant when it comes to tasty and wholesome fish.
